The process of my collaboration with Tim Bowness on Flowers At The Scene, Late Night Laments and latterly Butterfly Mind falls into two distinct modes of operation. Some of the tracks start life directly from the Bowness Central Recording Department and can be anything from sketches on ukulele to fully fleshed out tracks. We then both set about organising and arranging these ideas to fit the album. The other mode of operation involves me creating dozens of song beds which Tim then selects from and we both reshape the selected few to fit into the theme/sonic landscape of the album. Before We Knew is an album constructed from 8 of these song beds that didn’t get selected but were written for the Butterfly Mind sessions. I present them on this album as instrumentals; crafting sound stories by overlaying “atomic age” broadcasts from American radio ... "Watch the skies!" ... enjoy!
